Glenda Gayle Hohenthaner

Glenda Gayle Hohenthaner, 75, of Burlington, died at 5:10 AM Sunday, January 28, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Glenda Gayle Hohenthaner was born on September 5, 1942 at her grandmother's home in Howard, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Glen A. and Bouwiena J. Hevries Hebron.  On September 5, 1964 she married Robert Hohenthaner. He died in October of 1994.

Glenda was raised in Huron, South Dakota. She graduated from Huron High School in 1960 and entered St. John's School of Nursing where she graduated in the fall of 1963. 

She worked in a doctors office, for a brief time, before she and her husband moved to Minneapolis, MN.  They were "corporate gypsies" for years.  She lived in Minnesota, MO and finally in Iowa where she and her husband, Bob, operated The Broadway Lounge in West Burlington from 1981 until 1994. Glenda continued her nursing career in Iowa. She was a surgical nurse in Burlington before working as a nurse at the prison in Mt. Pleasant, IA.  She always joked about going to prison.  The inmates loved her sense of humor and nicknamed her "Go Fast Granny".  She retired from Health Services & Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility in 2007.

Glenda was a Roman Catholic and belonged to the Divine Mercy Parish of Burlington. Her faith was always very important to her throughout her life and during the time she was fighting cancer.  The 23rd Psalm was her favorite, which she would recite from memory. Glenda had a love of cooking for her family and friends. She loved to dance, travel, and collect antique dolls. She was a passionate Green Bay Packers fan and never missed a game.  She also enjoyed going to the Bees games and rooting for her home team.  She was the first female to become an officer for Elks Lodge #84, serving from 2005 to 2006.  Her sons and grandchildren brought her much joy in life as did all of her friends.

Survivors include her two sons, Jay (Shelley) Hohenthaner of Burlington, Chad Hohenthaner of West Burlington; six grandchildren,Taylor, Brayden (Kelsey) Hall, Delaney, Drake, Addison and Colten; one great-grandson, Miles Hall; significant other for many years, Fritz Rentzsch.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington .

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Hohenthaner will be 10:30 AM Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Divine Mercy Parish-SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at The Drake from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM following the service. 

Memorials have been established for the Special Needs Foundation and the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.
