Alfred Dean Kristensen, 86, of Burlington, died on Saturday November 14, 2020. He was born on June 28, 1934 in Hudson, IA. He was the son of Alfred C. and Zatha R. Kristensen. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1952, and went on to get his degrees at the Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa) and the University of Iowa. He began his 45 year long education career in Marengo, and moved to Burlington in 1958. He was united in marriage to Sue Fischer of Burlington on August 15, 1959.
He started teaching at Corse School and later served as principal at Prospect, Black Hawk, and Perkins Schools, finishing his career with the Burlington Community High School District at the Burlington High School. He also served the community working for the S.T.E.P. program at SCC for 10 years.
In his retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at the Welcome Center, the Burlington Public Library, and the Great River Medical Center. Al and Sue spent many years traveling with their friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Sue, of 61 years; two sons, Tom (Carol) of Ankeny, IA and Jeff (Amy) of Burlington; one daughter, Jane (Bruce) Murphy of Washington, IA; one brother, Dick Kristensen of Santa Rosa, CA; four grandchildren, Stephanie (Tyler) Ylvisaker, Matthew (Ashton) Kristensen, Keri (Lance) Van Polen, and Erik Murphy; and four great-grandchildren, Quinton, Grayson, Rowan, and Graham.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. Due to Governor Reynolds mandate regarding funeral gatherings, attendees are requested to pull under the front awning and stay in their vehicles until ushered inside.
A private family memorial service for Al will be 2:00 PM Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Very Rev. Fr. Marty Goetz officiating. The service will be live streamed on the Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home Facebook Page; https://www.facebook.com/prughthielen/ There will be an inurnment and committal service at Aspen Grove Cemetery following the service which is open to the public. Masks and social distancing are required.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Burlington Public Library and the Burlington Education Foundation.
