Lois Mae Dowell

January 21, 1923 ~ August 5, 2018 (age 95)

Lois Mae Dowell, 95, of Burlington, IA, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2018, at Oakview Nursing Home in Burlington.

Lois was born on January 21, 1923, in Sperry, IA, the daughter of Hazel and William Granaman. She married Leon Dowell on July 27, 1938.

Lois grew up on a farm near Sperry and attended Sperry Consolidated School. Her parents taught her the importance of family and the value of hard work, and she never forgot either lesson.

She was employed by GE for several years and then worked at Champion Industries, where she worked for 32 years before retiring at the age of 70. Her supervisor once said she was his most dedicated employee, rarely missing a day and always giving more than 100% effort to the job.
She was a member of Sperry Methodist Church and later attended Calvary Baptist Church in Burlington.

She was an avid gardener for most of her life, sharing her produce and canned goods with friends and family. She also loved to cook and bake bread. No one at her table ever went hungry. She was also a talented seamstress.

Throughout her life, she devoted much of her time and energy to her children and grandchildren, who she loved to be with and help any way she could. She was small in stature, but known for having one of the biggest hearts anyone could ever have.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Gary Dowell of Burlington, and Larry Dowell and his wife, Dorothy, of Lakewood, IL. Other survivors include seven beloved grandchildren: Sheryl Mark of Sarasota, FL; Brent Dowell of Reno, NV; Greg Dowell of Lake in the Hills, IL; Todd Dowell of Grain Valley, MO; Wendi Flatt of Middletown; Dawn Thurman of North Liberty; and Brian Dowell of Burlington. She also leaves behind 11 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; and five step great great grandchildren.
She is also survived by one sister, Betty Brockway of Burlington, and nine nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son Monte; two granddaughters, Brandee Dowell and Mindy Dowell; two sisters, Evelyn Murguia and Shirley Hales; and one niece.

The Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Great River Hospice.
