Irene Heyland, 93, of Des Moines died on April, 10th, 2019 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines, Iowa.
Born November 11, 1925 in West Point, Irene was a child of the depression and she carried those lessons throughout her life. She was the daughter of Adam and Mary Mueller also of St. Paul, IA.
She married John A. Link, Jr. on July 2nd, 1946 upon his return from active duty in the U.S. Navy in WWII. Together they had three children, Joyce married to Frank Kempker of Urbandale, Iowa, Judy, married to Jim McPartland of Brisbane, Australia and Jeff Link of Des Moines, Iowa. Irene and John bought a farm in 1960 and built a house for their young family. John Link died suddenly in 1967.
On October 19, 1970, Irene married Frank Heyland and moved to Burlington, IA. Irene and Frank raised his four surviving sons, Michael of Jamaica, Iowa, Richard of Weaver, Steven of Burlington, Iowa and Jon of Ft. Madison, Iowa.
Irene was an active member of St. Paul’s parish for decades taking pride in the annual bake sale and her special contribution of anise cookies. She was an avid bowler and was awarded Bowler of the Year in 2012. She was a long-time officer in the Burlington chapter of the National Association Railway and Veteran Employees including several years as its president. Irene was also a lifelong member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary in West Point, IA.
She was a generous mother and grandmother giving her time and talents to making quilts, customizing sweatshirts and innumerable plastic canvass creations for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She loved walking in Crapo Park, Hawkeye basketball, playing Phase 10, Big Joe’s Polka Show and Wheel of Fortune.
Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday, April 15 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Heyland will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, April 16 at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church with Very Re. Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the fellowship hall of St. Paul's Catholic Church following the service.
A memorial has been established for the Crapo Park Foundation for a park bench and tree planting. She loved walking in Crapo Park daily.
