George Fred Reif, 90 of West Burlington Iowa, formerly of Sperry, died Friday March 17, 2017 at his daughters’ home in Burlington under the care of HCI Care Services

Born November 25, 1926 in Sperry Iowa, he was the son of Albert and Esther Luth Reif. On April 26, 1947 he married Lorraine Johnson in Mediapolis Iowa. She died on June 15, 2007.

Mr. Reif worked as an electrician for over 65 years starting as an apprentice when he was a teenager. He worked for Mark Riffle Electric and then became a self-employed electrician while also working for BL Robinson Electrical Company until retiring in 1991. He was also hog farmer, specializing in raising feeder pigs.

He attended Sperry High School.

George enjoyed working outside, gardening, going fishing in his pond, and mushroom hunting with his daughters.  He especially enjoyed doing things with his twin grandsons and attending their sporting events. He was the Vice President of the Salem Lutheran Cemetery Association for many years.  Mr. Reif was always quick to help anyone who needed help, especially with electrical issues. Prior to moving to West Burlington, he attended Kingston United Methodist Church and enjoyed returning for their senior citizen lunches. Mr. Reif liked to travel with family and friends to Canada for fishing trips and throughout the United States including driving his convertible to Florida.  He was a loyal and dependable friend, family member, employee, and he took great pride in his work. George liked the St. Louis Cardinals and attending the Grand Ole Opry. He had an affinity for any type of dessert, especially Reese’s peanut butter cups.

Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Reif and Kelli (Moehn) Reif, both of Burlington; two grandsons, Marc and Monte; one great grandson, Gage; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two half-sisters and one half-brother.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.
