Betty (Mary Elizabeth) Smith, age 99, formerly of Burlington, died Tuesday, April 30, 2019, at St Camillus Assisted Living in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
Born December 11, 1919, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of John Arthur and Mildred Olivia Vollmer Uhler. On April 9, 1943, she married Sherman Allen Smith in Burlington. Sherm died on October 4, 2008.
Betty graduated from Burlington High School, received her bachelor degree from Monmouth College and completed her graduate studies at the University of Northern Iowa. After graduating she taught English at Burlington Community High School and then took a position as a Music Teacher at Notre Dame High School. Her love of her students and music resulted in her spending the vast majority of her teaching career at Notre Dame.
Mary was a life-long member of St. Lukes United Church of Christ, where she both sang in and directed the choir for many years, was active in Eastern Star and her bridge club. She enjoyed traveling, being with her family and friends, and spoiling her dogs!
Survivors include two sons, Sherman Smith, Jr. of Irvine, CA, Greg Smith of Brookfield, WI; daughter, Sharon Knotts of Merrimack, NH; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
As Betty and Sherm were joined in life for over 65 years, so they are now joined in death. A graveside committal service for both of them will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at Aspen Grove Cemetery with Pastor Peggy Stott officiating.
